# Can I livestream audio or video?

Live streaming audio or video directly from shared hosting is generally **not suitable**, and here's why — along with the right way to do it.

## Why shared hosting isn't built for livestreaming

Live streaming has a fundamentally different resource profile from serving web pages:

* **Persistent connections:** every viewer holds a connection open for the duration of the stream. Web servers on shared platforms are tuned for many short requests, not thousands of long-lived ones.
* **Constant bandwidth per viewer:** a 720p stream consumes roughly 1.5-3 Mbps per viewer, continuously. Even a modest audience multiplies this quickly.
* **Specialized software:** real streaming uses media servers and protocols (RTMP ingest, HLS/DASH delivery) that aren't part of a standard cPanel stack.

Running a stream from a shared account would degrade performance for the account and the server, so streaming servers aren't something we support on shared or reseller hosting.

## What works instead

**Use a streaming platform and embed the player on your site (recommended):**

* **YouTube Live** and **Twitch** — free, unlimited viewers, and both provide embed codes you can place on any page hosted with us.
* **Vimeo Livestream, Cloudflare Stream, Mux** — paid options with white-label players and more control.

Your website stays on our hosting and simply embeds the stream — this is how virtually every site with live video does it.

**Audio/radio streaming:** dedicated services like Shoutcast/Icecast hosting providers, Radio.co, or Live365 handle the stream; you embed their player on your site.

**Pre-recorded video** is different: you can host video files on your account and serve them normally, though for anything beyond light traffic a video platform or CDN will deliver a better viewer experience and save your bandwidth.

## Need more control?

If you need to run your own media server (e.g. OBS → RTMP → HLS with nginx), that requires a VPS or dedicated server with root access. Contact us and we can discuss options that fit.
