# Using the File Manager in Enhance

The Enhance File Manager lets you manage your website's files directly from your browser — no FTP client needed.

## Accessing the File Manager

1. Log in to your Enhance control panel.
2. Select the website you want to manage.
3. In the left sidebar, click **File Manager**.

## What you can do

* **Upload files** — drag and drop files or use the upload button. You can upload archives (zip) and extract them on the server.
* **Create files and folders** — use the New button to create empty files or directories.
* **Edit files** — open text files (HTML, PHP, CSS, JS, .htaccess, etc.) in the built-in editor and save changes directly.
* **Move, copy, rename, and delete** — standard file operations on single files or selections.
* **Extract and compress** — unzip uploaded archives, or compress folders for download.
* **Change permissions** — set file and folder permissions when an application requires it.

  For a typical website, directories should have permissions 755 and files 644. Avoid setting anything to 777 — it's a security risk.

## Uploading a website

To upload an existing site:

1. Compress your site files into a .zip archive locally.
2. In the File Manager, navigate to the document root.
3. Upload the zip file.
4. Right-click the archive and choose **Extract**.
5. Ensure your site's index file (index.html or index.php) sits directly in the document root.

## When to use FTP instead

For very large uploads or automated deployments, an FTP/SFTP connection can be more reliable than browser uploads. See [Managing FTP accounts in Enhance](/enhance-control-panel/managing-ftp-accounts-in-enhance) for how to set this up.
